Meet the Truesdail Family

Doug and Abeer Truesdail had what appeared to be a picture perfect family; two beautiful girls and a third child on the way. However, on January 17, 2005 everything changed for the Truesdails. Their daughter, Halima was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy II (SMA). Halima's parents were told that their daughter of 15 months would never walk, and that she would likely not live beyond the age of 2. Today, Halima is 11 years old. Her big sister Hady is 13, and younger brother Gabriel is 9. Halima also has a friend in her service dog named Dreamer to help her with daily tasks.

From the very beginning Doug and Abeer vowed to keep life normal for Halima and the rest of their children. They heard about A Kid Again through another family whose child has SMA. Abeer says “if we can't do an activity then we adapt it so we can”. “We try to enjoy every day we are given. We enjoy swimming, playing Wii, being outside, and being with family and friends.”

The real benefit to a Kid Again for our family is that the whole family is treated to a break. The activities are always wheel-chair friendly, and Halima’s brother and sister are always able to share in the fun. The only planning required is getting there, and sometimes for families like us, that in itself is a huge undertaking since we have to pack meds, supplies, and medical equipment. A Kid Again really gives us something to look forward to. It’s also nice to meet families that understand the difficulties that life brings and since we are in a group, you’re not looked at as different; you’re just another kid…another family.

“A Kid Again is the gift that keeps giving” says Abeer, Halima’s mom. “ We have been able to attend so many wonderful events that have created positive, family centered memories for our entire family. We have gone to the Magic show in Columbus, Boo at the Zoo, Cedar Point, the Annual Holiday Party, Cavs games, Indians game, and a Winter Break Hotel in Sandusky. With so much time allocated to the not so fun things in life that keep Halima healthy, it’s a refreshing break to have a Kid Again memories to reflect on and to look forward towards something fun and positive.”
